What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives
The right first move can reduce damage before service begins. Here’s what to do while help is on the way.
Shut off the water if you can
Turn the fixture shut-off valve clockwise for a toilet, sink, or appliance. For a whole-house leak, use the main shut-off — often near the water heater, garage, crawl space, or meter.
Keep people away from wastewater
If sewage is backing up, keep children, pets, and belongings clear. Don’t use other sinks, showers, laundry, or toilets until the line is checked.
Turn off power near standing water
Don’t step into standing water near outlets, appliances, or panels. If it’s safe, shut off power to the area — if it isn’t, stay clear and call for help.
